An urban development, a building site and the landscape that was already there. The Freie Mitte / Nordbahnhof is an urban and landscape project by the architecture and planning firm Vlay-Streeruwitz. It is a new 11ha model public space in the heart of the city of Vienna. The public park will be at the centre of a masterplan with residences, commercial spaces and offices. Built on a former railway area that was abandoned for many years and in which the lush, rich vegetation is being shaped as an informal, yet fully functional space. The vegetation of the new park will remain spontaneous and autochthonous, it will not be designed and planned in the most of the supporting infrastructure, it will be allowed to grow and change according to its own rules.
